Icelandic Horse Show: RESCHEDULED!
October 2, 2016

2016 will be a banner year for Icelandic horse shows in the Northeastern U.S. There are shows for every level of comptetition, from first-time Icelandic competitors through strong intermediates and all the way up to World Championship contenders. Hosted by Merrimack Valley Icelandics, this one-day show is an ideal warm-up for experienced competitors preparing for the sanctioned show in Kentucky or a great first-time show for riders new to Icelandic horse competition.

Divisions & Classes:

The divisions and classes for this show are listed below. They are derived from FIPO, the Rules for Icelandic Horse Sport of the International Federation of Icelandic Horse Associations (FEIF) and the show rules of the United States Icelandic Horse Congress (USIHC). The letters and numbers in parentheses after each class name correspond to that class’s designation in the FIPO rules.

Divisions:

OPEN DIVISION
These classes may be entered by any rider 14 years and older. Both preliminary and final rounds are offered for all Open Division classes.

INTERMEDIATE DIVISION
Intermediate classes are open to all non-professional riders who have not achieved a score of 6.0 three times, riding the same or different horses, in a specific discipline at USIHC sanctioned competitions.

NOVICE DIVISION
Novice classes are open to all non-professional riders who have not scored 5.0 three times, riding the same or different horses, in the Novice classes in USIHC sanctioned competitions.

YOUTH DIVISION
These classes are open to riders 16 years and younger as described below. The conducting of a final round in Youth Classes is in the discretion of the show organizer.

BEGINNING RIDER DIVISION
This division intended to provides riders new to competition on the Icelandic horse a place to receive feedback on their riding with the most opportunity to succeed without compromising the judging guidelines. Beginning Rider classes are open to all non-professional riders who have not scored 5.0 three times, riding the same or different horses, in any disciplines in USIHC sanctioned competitions.

GREEN HORSE DIVISION
This division provides trainers a place to introduce young horses to competition with the most opportunity to succeed without compromising the judging guidelines. Green Horse classes are open to all levels of riders on horses that have not scored 5.0 three times, in any disciplines in USIHC sanctioned competitions.

NON-DIVISION FUN CLASSES
Fun Classes are exactly what they sound like—classes intended to let the competitors have fun. They are not defined by either FIPO or USIHC.

Classes:

OPEN DIVISION CLASSES:

Tölt 1 Open Individual (T1)
Riders compete individually

  1. Begin at the middle of the short side and ride one round in slow tölt on either rein. Return to walk at the middle of the short side and change rein.
  2. From the middle of the short side ride one round in slow tölt, lengthen stride distinctly on the long sides.
  3. From the middle of the short side ride one round in fast tölt.

Tölt 2 Open Loose Rein (T2)
Riders compete individually

  1. Begin at the middle of the short side and ride one round in any speed tölt
  2. From the middle of the short side ride one round in slow, steady and calm speed tölt. Return to walk and change rein
  3. Ride one round in a slow to medium speed tölt, holding both reins in one hand clearly showing no rein contact with the horse’s mouth The marks for section 3 are doubled.

Tölt 3 Open Group (T3)
The test is ridden with two or more riders at once. The riders start on the rein as set in the starting list.

  1. Slow tölt. Return to walk change rein.
  2. Slow tölt on the short sides, fast tölt on the long sides. Fast tölt.

Tölt 4 Open Group Loose Rein (T4)
Preliminary Round:
This class is ridden with three riders at once

  1. Any speed tölt
  2. Slow, steady and calm speed tölt. Return to walk and change rein
  3. Slow to medium speed tölt, holding both reins in one hand clearly showing no rein contact with the horse’s mouth The marks for section 3 are doubled.

Four-gait Open Individual (V1)
Riders compete individually. The test may be ridden on either rein. The rider begins each segment of the test in the middle of the short side. The rider has four and a half rounds to show the following gaits in any order:

  1. Slow tölt
  2. Slow to medium speed trot
  3. Medium walk (shown for a half round only) Slow to medium speed canter
  4. Fast tölt
  5. Each gait may be shown only once, walk for a half round and the other gaits for one full round

Four-gait Open Group (V2)
The test is ridden with two or more riders. The horses show the four gaits as instructed by the announcer. They ride on the rein as set in the starting list.
Sections (called by the announcer):

  1. Slow tölt
  2. Slow to medium speed trot
  3. Medium walk
  4. Slow to medium speed canter
  5. Fast tölt

INTERMEDIATE DIVISION CLASSES:

Intermediate Tölt (T5):
The class is ridden with no more than six horses at once. 

  1. Slow tölt. Return to walk and change rein
  2. Slow tölt on the short sides, fast tölt on the long sides

Intermediate Loose-Rein Tölt (T6):
This class is ridden by no more than six riders at the same time. The rein is selected before the class begins. The horses show the sections below as instructed by the announcer.

  1. Any speed tölt
  2. Slow to medium speed tölt, on the long sides holding both reins in one hand clearly showing no rein contact with the horse's mouth.

Intermediate Four-gait (V3):
This class is ridden with no more than six riders at once. The sections below are ridden as instructed by the announcer.

  1. Slow to medium speed tölt
  2. Slow to medium speed trot
  3. Medium walk
  4. Slow to medium speed canter
  5. Medium to fast tölt

NOVICE DIVISION CLASSES:

Novice Tölt (T7):
This class is ridden with no more than six riders at once. The sections are ridden as instructed by the announcer.

  1. Slow tölt. Return to walk and change rein.
  2. Any speed tölt

Novice Four-Gait (V5):
This class is ridden with no more than six riders at once. The sections will be ridden as instructed by the announcer.

  1. Any speed tölt
  2. Slow to medium speed trot
  3. Medium walk
  4. Slow to medium speed canter

YOUTH DIVISION CLASSES (Riders 16 & under):

Youth Tölt (T8):
This class is ridden with no more than six horses at once. The sections shall be ridden as instructed by the announcer.

  1. Any speed tölt. Return to walk and change rein.
  2. Any speed tölt

Youth Four Gait (V6):
This class is ridden with no more than six horses at once. The sections below will be ridden as instructed by the announcer.

  1. Any Speed tölt
  2. Slow to medium speed trot
  3. Medium walk
  4. Slow to medium speed canter. The start into canter and the stop after canter into walk is shown separately by each rider as instructed by the speaker 

BEGINNING RIDER DIVISION CLASSES:

This class is ridden with no more than three horses at once. Only the performance on the long sides is judged. Riders may use the corners and short side to prepare their horses without being judged.

  1. Any speed tölt. Return to walk and change rein.
  2. Any speed tölt

Beginning Rider Four-Gait (VBR)
This class is ridden with no more than three horses at once. The sections shall be ridden as instructed by the announcer. Only the performance on the long sides is judged. Riders may use the corners and short side to prepare their horses without being judged.

  1. Any speed tölt.
  2. Any speed trot.
  3. Medium walk.
  4. Medium canter (shown one rider at a time).
  5. Any speed trot or tölt. (The mark in this section shall replace the mark for the earlier section, allowing the rider a chance to improve the tölt or trot score.)

GREEN HORSE DIVISION CLASSES:

Green Horse Tölt (TGH)
This class is ridden with no more than three horses at once. The sections shall be ridden as instructed by the announcer. Only the performance on the long sides is judged. Riders may use the corners and short side to prepare their horses without being judged.

  1. Any speed tölt. Return to walk and change rein.
  2. Any speed tölt

Green Horse Four-Gait (VGH)
This class is ridden with no more than three horses at once. The sections shall be ridden as instructed by the announcer. Only the performance on the long sides is judged. Riders may use the corners and short side to prepare their horses without being judged.

  1. Any speed tölt.
  2. Any speed trot.
  3. Medium walk.
  4. Medium canter (shown one rider at a time).
  5. Any speed trot or tölt. (The mark in this section shall replace the mark for the earlier section, allowing the rider a chance to improve the tölt or trot score.)

NON-DIVISION FUN CLASSES:

Beer Tölt (BEER)—Open to any rider, any age (group class)
Riders carry a full mug of (root) beer in one hand. Gaits will include walk and tölt, and may progress to trot and canter until there is a single winner. The rider finishing with the most liquid left in the mug wins.

Team Four Gait (TEAMV)—Open to any pair of riders, any age (one pair at a time)

Teams of two riders compete. Each rider on the team rides two gaits (walk, trot, tölt, canter). The team with the highest cumulative score wins.

Leadline (LEAD)—Open to riders age 6 and younger (group class)

Young riders are led by adults at the walk. Riders may be asked to trot, depending upon the level of the participants.

Pleasure Tölt (PTLT)—Open to any rider, any age (group class)

Riders will show any tempo tölt. The horse should give the impression of being a pleasure to ride. The judge evaluates the gait and look for harmony between horse and rider.

Mini Drill (MDR)—Open to any pair of riders, any age (one pair at a time)

A pair of riders ride side by side, beginning at a medium walk, then any speed tölt, then any speed trot. The pair should stay together throughout the gait changes.
